Underwater Abstraction is a solo exhibition by Dr Caitilin de Berigny. Environmental issues have been a theme in her work for the past decade. This show aims to raise awareness of climate change within the Great Barrier Reef. It has been affected by ocean acidification, pollution, over fishing and rises in ocean temperatures. The premise of the show stems from a larger collaborative artwork in partnership with a marine biologist, sound artist and interactive designers. In 2012, the work was selected for a solo exhibition in Berlin. The work was chosen from among 500 applications.

The artist went to shoot underwater photographs of the marine environment. She explained that it was a serendipitous moment when she was out early one morning with the purpose of filming the corals. She became more interested in capturing the figure within the landscape: “Figures are ephemeral, moving and so unlike taking still landscape photography.
